About

We’d like to introduce you to Virginia Walter and Mona Mitchell. They aren’t anyone famous and sadly they are no longer with us, but these two courageous women left my family with an amazing story, one that my mom, Carol, and I are going to attempt to tell over the next several years.

It will take a lot of work, a lot of travelling, and a ton of research, but we think it’s worth it. Virginia was my grandmother’s cousin and Mona was her best friend. They met while Virginia, in the Civil Service, was stationed in Japan during World War II, and they stuck together for nearly 50 years.

They criss-crossed the globe, picnicked in fields, raised pints in pubs, and went places many of us wouldn’t even think of going today. We have scanned almost 4000 slides of the places they went, the people they saw, and the history they recorded, as well as their diaries, log books, and maps.

We invite you to join us as we piece together the journey of these two fearless ladies, discovering the world as it was then, and exploring the world as it is now.
